In the wake of their exceptional achievements, both Villeneuve and Walker were shortlisted to win the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's outstanding athlete of the year, and so the 1997 judging panel faced an impossible decision. Only one of of these great athletes could win, and Villeneuve was ultimately awarded the honour.
